a wow of a weekend

another big weekend in the big city. friday i went along to cheer some friends competing in a university dance comp. then the bunch of us trammed into the cbd to carnivale. an old venue with a new concept, downstairs swing and upstairs 80s tunes. yes, there was a little mad dancing.

saturday i managed to do some writing and shopping. thai for dinner (which i will be getting back to because it was quite scrumptious) and the company wasn't bad either. pearly shells @ manchester lane - a tiny, tiny dance floor which we navigated well until a 60s tune was played. i went into some go-go action and proceded to knock a tray of glasses from a waiter and onto a patron's table - oops. i skedaddled not long after that. ha!!

sunday after some more writing and completing half my homework, it was off to fitzroy and the copacabana. the b# big band played a few sets - what a great way to come down from a fabulous weekend. oh and then there was icecream with nat.

writing dialogue

what can you say about these two characters huh??

one of the exercises luke gives us at the start of each class, is to pick a postcard (in this case, two) and then he asks us a series of questions. a character is fleshed out, we're given a location and then presto, a scene comes into being. well, mostly it's harder than that but i'm having an awful lot of fun.

and there's homework. dear heavens, i'm still doing homework. :)

and yes, i'm dancing tonight. again, still.

happy to report

friday night started off with a frappacino before meeting some of the swingkids at melbourne central for a movie. at 9 when we realised the only seats we were going to get were in the front row we made a mad dash up swanston and bourke to greater union. there we could sit wherever we damn well wanted too. so yah for GU. the film was tropic thunder, now whilst not the best film i've seen, it was pretty funny. though nat and i are still discussing whether we were laughing at the film, or laughing at jamie laughing at the film. whichever, fun was had.

man, saturday was hilarious. once i got the pain of the taxman...whooooaaaa... the tax man... out of the way, it was onto a burlesque class. now that was funny. lot of stretching and laughing and feathers. the centre had an open day so we went along. looks like i'll be taking that up in the near future. come to melbourne, join burlesque. why not? :)

blues dancing at the bendigo on sunday night. that was pretty casual and sleepy. the lights were so dim i thought i was a dream. now where was my dream guy? hmm...

chocolatey goodness!!!

abbotsford convent is in the middle of a chocolate festival. a whole weekend devoted to the love of chocolate. oh, bliss. and i swear as i was wandering around taste testing, i imagined this is what it would be like for wine tasting... but oh, so much better. :)

between the eating and drinking of chocolate and churros and strawberries (with chocolate of course) i walked around the convent and the grounds. just beautiful.

funnily enough they had chocolate wrestling. and i do suspect it took place in a room of worship, as the stained glass windows were just beautiful.

after coming down from the high that was the chocolate festival, i spent the rest of the weekend reading (starting and finishing breaking dawn), writing at starbucks, watching the dark knight, a long but entertaining film and downloading battlestar galactica under the doona.

whilst lurking

in ebay (for dressmaking patterns) i come across this. a long time ago, in a bush town far, far away... i had the white skating outfit made. yes, i'll confess. i was a competition rollerskater. i was young and no less foolish now than i was then. ha!! it was in a green blue lycra. yes, there were sequins (that my mom hand-sewed on) and yes, there was even the glitter stockings. one day if i'm ever out of storage i'll find some pics to post.

so long CBD social....

the classes will continue but fabulous nights of social dancing will no longer be held at the CBD. what an evening. penny took all the pics that i'm about to steal. so much fun was had that i'm aching and tired this morning. got into bed just after midnight (and on a school night even).

a mid-week delight

found myself once more at the national art gallery of victoria with a couple of friends and a fabulous band. no dancing this time, just some listening and watching on my part. the cairo club orchestra are sublime with their megaphones, fez hats and tunes of yesteryear. i will definitely go back for more and am entirely jealous i won't be on next week's bal class field trip (due to prior committments). but here's a few pics from the early evening.

we ended up at madame dynamite's after the ngvi, to listen to jessie g & the dancing jazz cats. madame d's first live performance. got thrown around the floor a bit too. a great crowd and a lot of fun.

sewing, swinging and socialising...

that was just about my weekend. there was a lot of sewing since i left putting my dress together til the last moment. sort of like being back at highschool really. consider doing the homework over the few weeks til it's due, but then the night before you realise you've run out of time and it has to be an all-nighter... remember those times?? yep, you never grow out of it. it's just tranferred to another area in your life. :)

so the red carpet ball for swing patrol's 10th birthday was on saturday night at the melbourne town hall. and it was swish. i got all dolled up in my newly made creation and trammed into the city. i had found a fantastic new coat the day before and made friends with the older gentleman who owns paddington coats on rathdowne. i wanted a specific style of coat so took in some pics, he was excited by them so i handed them over and he gave me a lifelong special deal when buying coats. so yah me.

i also splashed out on some gorgeous art deco jewellery. antique drop earrings and a little flower marquisite ring.

a whole lot of people were gathered at the bottom of the melbourne town hall stairs when i arrived. and didn't they just look fabulous. and so did the hall. it was just beautiful to be able to dance in such a gorgeous venue. ahhh....

a good night was had by all. and the b# big band - love those dudes and will be dancing to them again at the end of the month at the copa.

(borrowed a couple of pics from stephen & penny - many thanks guys)

sunday wasn't much of a sleep in... writing at starbucks before catching up with friends at the art gallery to listen to dizzy's big band before moving onto transit for some blues.

purchased and finished eclipse. the next in the series, breaking dawn is out today. it'll be a weekend buy, i feel.
