aaahhhhh...rt deco

a full day at an art deco symposium on saturday. local speakers focused on the exhibition being held for 100 days at the ngvi. honestly, i was in heaven. if someone would only invent a time machine (and i'll get to the tardis in a moment) i would dearly like to go back to that wonderful period to pick up a few bits and pieces, namely fabric, jewellery, furniture etcetc... i was there from 8.45 til around 5. i didn't get to see all of the exhibition so i'll have to go back again and again, i feel. :) you're not allowed to take photos of the exhibit so you'll have to do with this.

sunday i ended up watching a freebie movie, children of the silk road which i enjoyed. you know i've always wondered why the japanese entered the second world war - not that this film is anything to do with that. it's about the invasion of china by the japanese in the late thirties. i guess it might be linked somehow. but i'll have to research it a little to find out.

i watched episode 12 of doctor who series 4 this afternoon. twice! OH MY GOODNESS!! i'm not sure i can wait til next week... it'll be the last episode for this series, damn! i've really enjoyed it. loved it in fact. why does it ever have to end? why??

farewell to spenserslive

last night at this venue, so i thought i'd commiserate with baking chocolate muffins. they have a secret supply of baileys cream cheese in the middle. mmm...

there are too many tissues...

in my life right now and not enough drugs that work. come on already, i'm over you flu-like symptoms.

mind you, i'm glad i don't have to wash out hankerchieves. eww...

one cold and wet sunday morning

i was sitting in the melbourne town hall listening to garth nix tell stories about telling stories. when asked which of his books was his favourite he answered, "the one i haven't written yet". he always felt that the story was always so much better in his head, almost like something was lost in the translation. but at least he puts in the effort to translate. i struggle with that and rather than try and fail (or not), i never finish what i start. hmm...

and i think if there is a "de-generation" of what an author imagines and what comes out on the page, perhaps the reader picks up on this and fills in the missing pieces to create the wonderful world the author originally imagined.

i don't know, what do you think?

newer history and old

saturday started with a trip over to williamstown, breakfast at the fresh provisions cafe (which is just fabulous) and then a wander through "the way we wear" fair at the town hall. what a wonderful time. yes, i bought stuff - a pair of earrings, some fabric, a few 1940s australian home journals, cute pair of green evening gloves - oh and some fantastic bakelite buttons. cheng and dave provided some impromptu swing dancing on stage. the crowd enjoyed that.

the below newspaper was displayed in the town hall foyer - it's my birth date, not year (so no smart comments).

had my first thai massage in the afternoon. it was pretty funny when i had a little woman sitting on the back of my legs, pummelling my back. there may be bruises i haven't looked yet.

caught the tram into the city early evening, it was raining softly not snowing.

met up with sophie and suze to watch sex & the city at melbourne central - i enjoyed it, most entertaining. then burgers (almost minus bun) for dinner.

sunday morning was starbucks and frankie manning. i like these mornings. then onto the final showing of medieval imagination at the state library. there was a long line, so it was lucky i got there early. it was an exhibition of illuminated books from around 13th century til the 17th. beautiful.

then i wandered around the city taking pictures of buildings, eating a few mini cupcakes from little cupcakes on degraves. picked up some reading material from magnation (yes, i always need more to read) and then a late lunch at pellegrinis.

soph cooked shepherd's pie for dinner... warm winter food. yah!

another working week over

and none to soon. i've signed up for a short writing course in august, a morning with garth nix later this month and an art deco symposium to attend. there'll be dancing, sewing, writing and moments of wonder ahead. i shall treasure these evenings of nothing in front of the telly.

the long lost weekend

there was a weekend amongst all that blues dancing. everything went by in a blur. saturday and sunday workshops, noon til 6, social dancing in the evenings.

i tried to recuperate on the monday but found myself wandering shop to shop in the city, in between filling up on mocha frappacinos. of course i had lindy class on monday night that i couldn't pass up, and balboa last night. i just can't seem to keep off the floor now. a habit or an obsession? you pick!

more ainsley posters all over town.

how fabulous!!!

had a great weekend.. how about you? friday was a night on the couch... oh how i needed that. there was doctor who and there was peppermint chocolate. and a deep blue sea doona to drown in.

cafe bagatelles was the place to break my fast. eggs, bacon and hashbrowns. had to set myself up for the day. a hair appointment later i was on my way into the city (thanks soph) to catch a class at CAE. i had signed up for a talk on the history of the camino. it was fantastic and i'll be back to take the practical guide to the camino later this year. but sitting in the room with all these other people reminded me how much i loved to be surrounded by other people with similar interests, all passionate to learn. there will be more classes to come, and soon.

this eve was the "meet the scene" ball at the prahran town hall. got all gussied up for the event. i was surprised there weren't more people themed up but it was a fabulous evening of dancing to the pearly shells and catching up with people from all over victoria who are swing dancers.

sunday was the first day of winter and also the third anniversary of my dad checking out. i won't say passing away because it would just remind me of flatulence - and yes, he was prone to that. i miss my dad immensely. a good travelling companion, could talk crap for hours, and a bloody fantastic dad - the absolute best.

this day i watched the fourth indiana jones instalment, indiana jones and the kingdom of the crystal skill and even with all the bad press i have to say i enjoyed it. it kept to the indy formula and i liked that. i remember watching raiders of the lost ark as a family when it first came out - yes i know, i'm getting past the young stage. in age maybe, not behaviour or attitude. :)

onto a bookstore and a late lunch at pellegrinis - canneloni and a granita. mmmmm.... this is one of my favourite places in the city. then a late sunday arvo, sitting on the stoop in the sun at home reading frankie. these kind of sundays are dreamy.
