visiting an institution...

not sure what i got up to for most of the day, i think it was wandering around and taking in the remaining sights of downtown. there was an amazing banana split to be had. i can't begin to tell you how much ice cream and frozen yoghurt i had during my u.s. summer.

then a night at the grand old opry. for those of you who don't know what this is all about, the opry is the world's longest running radio program. it started in 1925 and is dedicated to country music. the opry has a HUGE history with the likes of hank williams, patsy cline, dolly parton, dixie chicks, gram parsons and the byrds and so many others gracing the stage. even elvis presley but they didn't take kindly to his sort.

back in the day i think it was only one night a week, but now there are shows on tuesday, friday and saturday. i had no idea who i was going to see but in all there were 11 performers, most of who did a few songs each.

started off with marty stuart and co...

they were followed by connie smith and jim ed brown. jim sang a song that i remember dad used to play on the stereo, so i could almost sing along, it was an oldtime tune.

the pic below is sturgill simpson.

in between most of the acts is this guy whose job it is is to read the live commercials. and he has to do it with some of the band members trying to put him off his game. quite funny to watch - and i'm sorry but i can't remember his name. arrgh!

these guys were old school, riders in the sky. great entertainers.

then the dude in the middle is will hoge. i think one of his songs is a car commercial, but i won't hold that against him.

i was quite surprised at this next guest because i knew who it was... deacon from the tv show nashville, or in reality charles esten. nice voice, and very cute in the flesh.

after the break ricky skaggs and team.

before more nashville crooners - sam palladio plays gunnar on the show (and is actually english not american)...

and clare bowen, who also plays a tennessee native on the show is a bloody australian. i got quite a shock when she opened her mouth in a familiar accent. clare got a rousing opry cheer for her performance - she plays scarlett in the show.

the last half hour of the night was dedicated to trace adkins who was celebrating his 10th anniversary as an opry member. he brought his wife and four blonde girls out - it's definitely a family affair on this stage.

i had a ball... the people around me were fantastic, even though we were squished into these pew like seats. i'd go again definitely, lots of fun was had.
