and i did. make it here. on a plane, then a train. kim left me at time square and i found me a starbucks and a seat for breakfast. they've shut off parts of time square for a pedestrian mall since i was here last. good idea.
after that i hopped an empty subway train down south to battery park and the staten island ferry. so i got on the boat, took photos, then got off the boat, walked around a corner and got on another boat back the same direction the first boat came from. just people watching.
back up to midtown and the flatiron building. i figured i needed a midway point to start the day's trek. for the moment working my way north.
i went to fao schwarz in the hope of living out the dream from big. you know, tom hanks dancing on the floor piano? well, all i came across was the make your own muppet and the big piano in a box.
and then, though i had no plans to do so, my feet found their way into central park. damn you feet. don't you know how much pain you've been in the last few days? well, you have only yourself to blame. how about those fall colours huh? pretty spectacular.
i got a bit lost in the park (like last time) so when i found my way out again i continued north, but on a bus this time. i was heading to harlem and the apollo theatre. i could only get into the foyer though and that wasn't too impressive. did buy myself a book on the history of the theatre though. one to enjoy later. after wandering the streets a little and just seeing how diverse the neighbourhood really is from the rest of manhatten i went south again.
ah... the chelsea hotel. i had to do it, you know for you i would make the exception. ;)
then heading west from there i hit this new building going up. all chrome-like and swiss cheese. awesome.
now my reason for heading west was in search of the highline. which is where the city has taken the old elevated train tracks and made gardens in the sky and a walking trail. they are planning on extending it further even. it's fantastically fantastic and today being such a beautiful sunshiney day, people were out in hoards, soaking up the last rays of autumn.
stumbled into the cobblestones of tribeca. ooohhh... reminded me a bit of europe truth be told.
headed east to find astor place where i'd be meeting kim.
we were off to st mark's place - AWESOME! i love the streets in greenwich and the east village. so much life and fun and people.
after dinner at the yaffa cafe (this is a tradition for kim to take friends visiting new york) we wandered by katz deli, which is where "the" scene from when harry met sally took place.
we were in search of cupcakes and so walked almost the full length of bleeker, from east village, through greenwich to west village to the magnolia bakery.
i didn't really know what the big deal was, i just wanted cupcake. supposedly it's the bakery from sex and the city. the cake was good, the frosting? i've had better. crumbs in l.a. for example. oh yeah. :)
just a sign... have you seen it??
i traversed the length and width of manhatten on this day. i will be replacing my feet once i get home.
