the other sides of new york

didn't spend much time in manhattan today. the plan was to walk through a bit of queens before heading to brooklyn, however the moving image museum in queens is closed for renovations until january, so it missed my patronage. a good thing i called before walking over there. my feet did thank me for that small mercy.

so i ended up catching the subway to the very beginning of the brooklyn bridge (on the manhattan side), i got a bit bamboozled to start with and ended up underneath the bridge (which turned out pretty good as i like the pics i took) and then had to ask a nice policeman for directions.

even though it was a cool and blustery day there were still a whole lot of tourists crossing the bridge. i am a traveller, not a tourist i'll have you know. ;)

this is the manhattan bridge, taken from an area of brooklyn known as dumbo. it's an up and coming artist's enclave, still heavily under construction though. near this area the brooklyn bridge park is one of the first, or maybe the first park to have free wifi. how funny is that?

a couple of mad shots as i trained over the manhattan bridge. i'm getting to know my way around this city, let me tell you.

made it back over to greenwich and east village because it's just a great people watching area. this is washington park. last time i was here it was the end of summer and the fountain was still full of people just hanging out and enjoying the sun. seasons change and now the fountain is used for seating. good design (which you can't see here, but take my word for it - or don't and visit new york yourself).

up to midtown to meet kim. the chrysler building lights came on as i approached grand central. nice timing i thought.

over to brooklyn once more and an area called williamsburg for dinner. a great thai restaurant. the neighbourhood is fantastically full of life and laughter. afterwards we walked along different streets just checking out the action.

we walked FOREVER. honestly. i thought my feet were stumps before? i was wrong. we walked across the pulaski bridge to get a most magnificent view of nyc, it may not come out as spectacular through the pictures, but trust me, awesome. what also won't be apparent in the photos is how damn cold it was. bloody freezing. and there i was kneeling on the ground trying to hold the camera still so i could get a few pics without using the flash. oh my.

and on the way back to astoria, queens. kim on her mobile on the subway, a usual sight.

there is a bit of a respite from all the walking tomorrow. i get to drive... woohoo!!
