happy birthday brother

it's my little brother's birthday today...awww... and the bum won't answer his phone. where's the love?? actually, it's his birthday in australia today but where i am it's tomorrow. oh the confusion of datelines.

just had my last day in san francisco - it was a gorgeous day out. after the usual breakfast i walked to find a bus and came across the hallidie building. it was built in 1917 and was the world's first glass-curtain-walled building. picture's not too great but the building is pretty impressive.

a bus came along and drove me up to washington square and from there to coit tower on telegraph hill.

the frescoes inside were painted by local artists in 1933.

here's the view from the top.

i walked down the filbert steps - which is one of the last staircases around telegraph hill that has the wooden steps. absolutely beautiful buildings and gardens everywhere i looked. and the views they have....wow!!

ended up along the embarcadero to catch the f-line train into the central district. my feet were so darn sore.

had a late lunch in the san francisco centre, before hitting the sfmoma, which is the san francisco museum of modern art.

you're not allowed to take any sort of photography in the galleries, but i got to sit in front of some amazing pieces of modernist work. one of the exhibitions was actually inside a giant freezer. i had to wrap a blanket around myself before walking into the 9f climate. the work was by olafur eliasson and it was a car that had been frozen - but the designs over it and within were just fantastic. i'm assuming that there was wire and water involved in getting the intricate icicles.

from here i made my way up to chinatown and the heaven that is called reflexology.

oh yes, one hour of bliss, mixed with a bit of pain as the kinks were worked out of my feet and calves. i even think that my lower back is kinkless now. i wandered through chinatown on the way back to the hotel.

but not before i caught another trolley.

road trip tomorrow.
