i love downtown

after the usual stop at starbucks i hit the 405, then the 110 to the city. first of all i wandered through the fashion district and all the fabrics. holy cow - how does one know which store to go into? there are that many. actually, i almost forgot what country i was in, let alone the city. did not feel like i was in northern america.

the first building i saw that i had to get closer to was the eastern. the colour is just spectacular.

from here i wandered down broadway, which holds all the old hollywood theatres. it's a real shame that they haven't been looked after and are now $2 stores and the like. the streets also smell strongly of urine. but i found everyone i spoke with really friendly. i've decided i'm one of those people that can see how things used to be, not how they presently are. no wonder i still love hollywood boulevard. ha! anyway, the below photos are mostly theatres from along broadway but if you ever get a chance to visit l.a. don't miss downtown. it really is worth the visit.

this building is the united artists theatre. united artists was created in the 20s by the silent actors, mary pickford, douglas fairbanks and charlie chaplin, along with the director d.w. griffith. this theatre opened in 1928 and is now used as a church.

the orpheum theatre opened in 1926. live events are still held here.

i'm surprised i didn't bump into someone or get hit by a car, i was walking along broadway and crossing the street with my head looking up. it really is fantastic.

next was the rialto and the tower.

then the roxie and the cameo.

the los angeles theatre was built in 1931 during the depression. charlie chaplin premiered city lights here in the same year.

the palace theatre was built in 1911, one in a chain of orpheum theatres - it is the oldest remaining orpheum theatre in the u.s. the current owners are planning on renovations so it can once again be used for events.

recognise this building from a few movies??

here's a few buildings that caught my eye.

on the walk back to the car, with aching feet i saw this sign... just liked the font.

and then there's these zoot suits. a few places like this downtown.
